The red book of woody plants of the Czech Republic, The red book of threatened species of the floodplain forests of the Lower Morava Biosphere Reserve and The red list of threatened species of TFE Křtiny

Supported by grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway

The project has three main objectives:

Objective 1. Analysis of the status and development of endangered species of woody plants in the Czech Republic

The first phase of the project represents an analysis of the status of threatened species of woody plants in the Czech Republic. Given that in the Decree no. 395/1992 Sb. the number of endangered tree species omitted, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment and identify species at-risk that should be included among the species that are specially protected. That means that on the basis of this evaluation complete list of endangered tree species will be made, which will become one of the bases for the Red book of woody plants of the Czech Republic. This book will be the basis for legislative amendments to Decree no. 395/1992 Coll., respectively Annex no. II.

Department of Forest Botany, Dendrology and Geobiocoenology is one of the few in the Czech Republic to be specialized in the field of Dendrology - evaluation of tree species and their ecology, both in terms of personnel and instrumentation. There has been published book on Woody plants of the Czech Republic (grant Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports reg. No. LP 0081) in the past. Subsequently, in 2005 at the request of the Ministry of Environment our department processed the Red List of Woody plants of the Czech Republic. The project is therefore a continuation of previously processed materials.

The main outcome of this part of the project will be above mentioned Red Book of Woody plants of the Czech Republic.

Objective 2. Evaluation of representation of endangered species in selected groups of organisms on the TFE Masaryk Forest Křtiny

Objective 3. Evaluation of representation of endangered species in selected groups of organisms in a floodplain forests of the Lower Morava Biosphere Reserve

There will be a survey of endangered species of organisms carried out on the two selected territories (TFE and the floodplain forests of the Lower Morava BR) as well as the evaluation of these areas.

The gained knowledge will be used for processing the red lists of endangered species of organisms of TFE and the Lower Morava BR. The list for the LM BR will be published in the following publications: The Red List of plants of the Lower Morava BR, The Red List of vertebrates of the Lower Morava BR and The Red List invertebrates of the Lower Morava BR. The map of the Lower Morava BR will also be published. The map will display small individual protected areas and description of selected endangered species of organisms. The data from the TFE will be published on CD in an electronic version the Red List of TFE Masaryk Forest Křtiny.

Within both parts of the project we will organize in cooperation with Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic and the Lower Morava BR the training of civil servants, local governments, Zidlochovice Forest Enterprise and TFE staff through the seminars for determination and protection of selected endangered species. The university students and the general public will be informed through seminars about the issue of endangered species and their protection. A memory game with the theme of endangered species of Lower Morava BR will be prepared for the small children. A brief guide to protect organisms in the electronic version will also be prepared.
